Made at the height of both the cold war and the space race, The Silent Star -- an adaptation of Stanislaw Lem's first novel Astronauci -- was the first science fiction film produced by East Germany's state run DEFA studio. While some B movie fans might have an over-familiarity with it in its drastically altered, MSTK-mocked incarnation as First Spaceship on Venus, seeing it in its original form offers another experience entirely.
