i'd forgotten about Times Square, i saw it on cable back in the 80's and was also impressed with Robin Johnson. i was disturbed by the ending, however, with Nicky swimming away to drown in the anonymity of the crowd and the Rich Girl just standing there on the marquee with a smug smile on her face and already composing "How I Spent My Summer Vacation" in her head...
I absolutely agree. It makes it appear that, in the end, it was all very much a lark for Trini Alvarado's character, whose reconciliation with her father is handled so summarily that it casts doubt upon just how distraught she really was at home in the first place. In the end it's all very Hollywood: Because Nicky got to be famous and bask in the applause of the crowd for a fleeting moment, it counts as a happy ending, regardless of what becomes of her after that.
