Bowie was pissed that Sweet ripped off Jeff Beck's riff (from the Yardbird's version of "I'm a Man") before he could release "Jean Genie" (which has the same rip-off riff).
There's another video for this song with Steve Priest (the guitarist camping it up) is in Nazi drag with a little Hitler mustache. Genius.
Until I had the opportunity to watch these old clips of them on YouTube, I always had the impression that Sweet were essentially a group of yobs who adopted the glam look as a matter of career expediency. Given that, I was surprised to see just how much Priest seemed to be enjoying queening it up in those clips. It's hilarious! It's good to know he's alive and well and hasn't gone the sad route of Brian Connolly.
PLEASE NOTE: I do not sell, trade, upload or otherwise provide copies of the films that I review on this site, so please don’t ask.
Please, no questions about where to download films or subtitle files. If you are asking about the availability of a reviewed film on DVD, please make sure that you have first conducted a simple search of the film’s title on Google, eBay, and Amazon. That usually works for me.

Yeah,it was a tough call between this one and the clip of "Wig Wam Bam" with Steve wearing the full Indian headdress.
ReplyDeleteSteve Priest - fashion icon.
ReplyDeleteI think the fact that he never took it seriously is one reason he's both alive and sane today.

ReplyDeleteHere's a piece from my Bubblegum book that I wrote about glam, and especially the Chin/Chapman team with Sweet.
